VIDEO – What is walking distance to a market in Mérida? Due to the heat, intense sun, and seasonal rains, walking distance is subjective. It depends upon the individual’s tolerance for all of these tropical climate attributes.
When I was searching for my first Airbnb in Mérida back in 2019 (boy, that seems like a long time ago), my goal was to be within walking distance to a market in Mérida. What I didn’t realize at the time is that my definition of walking distance and a local’s definition of walking distance were two completely different things.
Arriving bright eyed and bushy tailed at my first long term Airbnb (two month stay), I looked around the neighborhood. I saw long blocks of houses and nothing else. Just to the south was a commercial area with retail buildings and a couple of car dealerships. And then…nothing.
The owner stated I was within a few blocks of a local market. But, where was it? After looking, perusing, and walking for (what seemed like) an eternity, I could NOT find any market. Exhausted, I returned to the Airbnb and asked the owner the exact location of the market. She told me it was actually about 10 blocks or a 20 minute walk.
THIS was definitely NOT my definition of walking distance BUT it was hers . . . and, as she is the local expert, she was right!
