Drinking water straight out of the tap is a big no-no. The locals don’t do it, so follow their lead. However, you can bathe or brush your teeth with tap water. But, if you’ve ever had a parasite or have a sensitive stomach, you may want to keep a bottle of water by your sink and use that instead.
Many people want to know if boiling eggs or pasta in tap water is ok. I would say that this is a personal choice, however I would not do it. Minerals, a dirty tinaco or well, and a host of other things can add a funky smell to the water. This may not bother some, but for others it will not work.
Additionally, restaurants use filters for things such as ice. Again, this may or may not bother you. When in doubt, just say no. I also learned that even bagged ice can have contaminants. You may even consider making your own ice at home with bottled water. Just a thought.
