Can I flush toilet paper in Mérida?

Sharing is caring!

VIDEO – To flush or not to flush toilet paper in Mérida . . . THAT is the question. The short answer is NO. However, you will find a few locations around the city where you can flush. But, that’s the exception not the rule.

When I told my friends and family I was moving to Mexico, they asked me, “Uh, aren’t there some places where you can’t flush toilet paper? Is Mérida one of those places?” Not skipping a beat, I answered with, “Yes, it’s one of THOSE places and, of course, it won’t bother me.” Really, it’s just something you get used to – one of the many changes of moving to a foreign country.

Naturally, there are ways to make the process, well . . . how do I say, less messy? And, it’s really not as bad as you imagine. Like I mentioned before, there are a few places where you can flush toilet paper in Mérida – just look for the signs. Costco is one of the locations.
However, please do not assume because it is a new, newish, or remodeled place, you can flush. How will you know? There are signs posted stating whether you can flush or not OR there are large trash cans available. Large trash cans indicate that flushing is not allowed.
Good luck!

Hola, I’m Amy!

My love affair with Mexico began when I worked in the Riviera Maya in 2006. The culture, sense of community, and slower pace was magic. It’s also where I learned about Mérida. When people talk about Mérida, their faces light up like it’s Christmas… it has THAT kind of effect.

After visiting Mérida for the first time in September of 2019, it had the same effect on me. Within 3 months, I sold everything and took a leap of faith to start a new life. The magic of Mérida continues to feed my soul. I finally know what true happiness feels like. Now, I’m intent on sharing what I’ve learned so that you know what it takes to start a new life in Mérida.

I hope this site gives you inspiration, insight and answers to all things Mérida!
